possible terms

A "to be continued" list. Some of these will need more explanation than others, as most of the terms come from biology or complexity studies. Also, I'm just going to constantly modify and add to this list

  • adaptive behavior
  • fatigue: slows emergence, due to overstimulation
  • feedback, negative: discouraging
  • feedback, positive: encouraging
  • frequency
  • generic form
  • gradient: suggested direction
  • homophily: "the “birds of a feather” tendency of like to associate with like, which characterizes not only college fraternities but also the personnel makeup of firms." (Watts 58)
  • homeostasis: the "knack for self-regulation" (Johnson 140)
  • ideology: "the mental frameworks—the languages, the concepts, categories, imagery of thought, and the system of representation—which make different classes and social groups deploy in order to make sense of, define, figure out and render intelligible the way society works." (Hall, Problem 26)
  • ideological thread, strand: a component that makes up a part of an ideology; Reaganism's supposition that "everyone is middle class" is a strand of Reaganism proper
  • information cascade: "an event [where] individuals in a population essentially stop behaving like individuals and start to act more like a coherent mass" (Watts 206)
  • morphogenesis: study of the evolution of a complex form from simple beginnings
  • phase transition: "changing from one defined state to another at a critical juncture" (Johnson 111)
  • power law: "the top ten most popular sites are ten times larger than the next hundred more popular sites" (Johnson 119)
  • serial versus parallel: top-down versus side by side
  • superorganism
  • system (wide) event
